The Nina Variations

The Nina VariationsThe Nina Variations is a jewel of a script from Steven Dietz that was a perfect fit for Will as director and heaven rewarded us good a cast as you can hope for in Rachel McGinnis and Aaron Halloway. What should be a tedious exercise in deconstructing the penultimate scene of Chekov’s The Seagull is instead an intimate, warm, affecting look at two characters you thought you understood. 43 flashes into what could have been as they try to escape the world Chekov fenced them into and the relationship they were never allowed to have. Nina herself says, “A play needs love”, this play is drenched in it.

The Nina Variations was a return to both published text and Gobotrick after Cambiare’s first outing developing Transformations. Focused on simplicity and sticking to our (less numerous) roles, it was the most solidly produced show to date, with deadlines met, a small City of Austin grant acquired, and a wonderfully organized team. The benefits of focus are clear.
